“See What Great Love the Father Has Lavished on Us” –  
1 John 3:1 

The love of God is something I think we will never fully grasp. It is so measureless, timeless, holy, unending, perfect and deep that we simply cannot truly wrap our minds around it. It is like when someone tells us to picture a trillion of something. We do not really have a frame of reference for what a trillion looks like, so we struggle to understand it fully. In the same way, we can understand some measure of human love, but we cannot fully comprehend God’s love because even the greatest human love cannot compare with the love of God.  

C.S. Lewis once wrote, “On the whole, God's love for us is a much safer subject to think about than our love for Him.” Does this statement ring true for you, as it does for me? I am convicted by this statement because I know His love is so much greater than my feeble attempt to love Him back. Our Heavenly Father has shown us what true love means. He demonstrated His love for us through Christ and His sacrifice on the cross. Why can’t we love like Him?  Is it because of our human nature and attitude? Can it be changed? Yes, when we remain in Jesus and allow His character to shape us, we are gradually transformed into His likeness.

We celebrate Father’s Day in the month of June. Each celebration gives us an opportunity to reflect on the wonderful love of our Heavenly Father and to honour earthly fathers. John begins this verse by inviting us to “see” something wonderful that he himself had experienced. “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God!”

Being children of God is not merely a religious expression, it is relationship. We are invited to live in this relationship in our daily life. We thank God for earthly fathers whose love, though imperfect, can reflect something beautiful about our Heavenly Father’s heart. We must understand that for some celebrating Father’s Day can be difficult. Because of the pain of losing a father, difficult family relationships, or deep disappointments. In such moments, the message of 1 John 3:1 becomes especially precious. God’s love is not dependent on human perfection. Our Heavenly Father welcomes the broken-hearted, comforts the lonely, and remains faithful even when people fail us.

This Father’s Day, may we rejoice in the truth of the Gospel, that we are deeply loved by God. Our Father has lavished His love upon us, and through Jesus Christ, we are called children of God. What a love! What a hope! What a Father!
